A Brummie by birth, I am passionate about voice! Coming from a performing background, I learnt what good audience engagement was from watching my father Frank perform his famous brother’s songs around the theatres of Great Britain in the 70’s. His famous brother (my uncle) was George Formby, the ukulele playing film star of the 30’s and 40’s. I watched masterful entertainers and singers from the sides of most of the stages around the midlands and north of England.
Having spent a few years exploring life as a sound engineer in my early 20’s, I embarked on a music degree at the Royal Welsh Collage of Music in Cardiff. I wanted to be an opera singer, and spent a good while pursuing that dream until wanting a family became a bigger dream. With a family, came a need for stability so I settled down to run a voice coaching studio and have never looked back.
Training voices became a passion as well as studying it, and that lead me to a 6 year role as voice coach for the popular music degree course at the University of South Wales as well as teaching classes and over 800 students to date.
I became interested in working with speakers and leaders when a manager approached me and asked me to help him with a vocal delivery and presentation he had to give the following day. We spent an hour together and he emailed the day after to say he had got the promotion and was commended for the best presentation. It was clear from this point that there was a need for a deeper working knowledge of speech work for business professionals as well as how that impacts on confidence and career opportunities.
To date I have delivered workshops on mastering your sales message, finding your voice, speaking up in meetings, creating keynote and signature talks and network pitches, and 1-2-1 sessions with professional public speakers and entrepreneurs needing media training through to crafting bespoke training sessions for senior leaders at the Ministry of Defence. I met my partner in crime Gavin Hill-John at a networking event and founded the communications and personal development company Talk Skills.
