The release of On My Mind is a “defining moment” for alternative rock composer Luc Garrett, and the track is not what listeners already familiar with his music will expect. Having started his career in Northern Ireland, Garrett moved to Manchester in 2019. With key influences including Chet Faker, Tame Impala, Alt-J, The War On Drugs, Jeff Buckley and FKJ, listeners can expect a creative and unique take on the broad genre.
Garrett moved to Manchester from his home in Derrynoose, Northern Ireland, leaving his old band behind to start something new. Having studied through the pandemic, Garrett took his time to hone his sound and find the right band members to match his energy and sound.
Someone I Don’t Know – Garrett’s first single, was just a prelude to what is to come. On My Mind is Luc Garrett’s true debut release.
While the melancholic sentiment is still there, On My Mind is widely different to Someone I Don’t Know. With his band now in order, Garrett is finally able to express the full extent of his creativity. At seven minutes long, Garrett flexed his love of experimental music, uncaring about the typical restrictions of pop music and focusing instead on authenticity.
“I tried to shorten it several times to be more radio friendly, but it never felt right, and I want it to be right.”
Among the moody wall-of-sound rock, listeners will find influences of psyche-rock and dream-pop. Luc Garrett is a storyteller. On My Mind’s lyrics are relatable, about a dark time in which Garrett himself struggled with.
“On My Mind is, like the name suggests, about having something on your mind all the time, and being unable to truly confront it.”
Unable to sleep and gathered by the window of his flat, watching the urban world pass by during the early hours of the morning, Garrett wrote the lyrics to On My Mind, calling it a “defining” moment for him.
Having recently played shows at iconic Manchester venues such as Gullivers, Band On The Wall and Rebellion, Garrett is ready to bring his instrumental proficiency and unique sound to the Manchester alternative scene.
