Black Aleph is a Sydney/Melbourne based experimental ensemble featuring Lachlan Dale (guitar/effects), Peter Hollo (cello/effects) and Timothy Johannessen (percussion).

Drawing inspiration from diverse sources ranging from post-metal to middle-eastern modal music, Black Aleph performs both composed and improvised pieces that involve the players layering live-loops, ritualistic-beats and doom-metal style musical variations that progressively unfold and build in intensity throughout the performance. Their sound has been compared to Justin Broderick, Neurosis, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Reins cut his teeth as a singer songwriter playing intimate sets in small candle lit folk nights. A love for lyrics led him to poetry and that poetry began to run through his blood and bleed into performance. In lockdown he became obsessed with analogue synthesis, which pulsed in his veins. All the while hours producing electronic music in dark rooms flexed its talons and wings and littered his ears with felt piano, violins and techno. Over years these elements collided and entangled, until they settled in unexpected harmony. The result can be described as lyric driven, cinematic folk, with an electronic undertone. It is heartfelt, ridiculous and original. With your eyes closed the music sits in that liminal space where the tree line ends and the city lights begin. Somewhere between the birdsong and the sirens.

Fred Hills is a drummer, composer & collaborator based in Brighton, UK. Taking inspiration from a wide range of genres, Hills' music is a captivating blend of contemporary jazz, alt-folk & progressive indie. His debut EP, ‘Incerto’, released via Ninja Tune, is ‘a tapestry of delicate and expressive guitars, eloquent strings and colourful rhythms’, as described by Indie Band Guru. Pivotal release 'The Ground', is a fine example of Fred's ability to diversify his sound, trading his folk sensibilities for dynamic lyricism, expansive production and punchy drum grooves.
