A Respectable Wedding

A Respectable Wedding by Bertolt Brecht, translated by Rory Bremner

Originally created by German playwright Bertolt Brecht as a satirical jab at middle-class respectability, Rory Bremner’s translation of A Respectable Wedding turns this hidden gem into an unapologetically cringe-worthy comedy.

As a couple settle down to enjoy a romantic wedding dinner, their night is flung into disarray thanks to the father’s disgusting tales, a mortifying best man and plenty of squabbling wedding guests. This then exposes the flaws of the bride and groom themselves, resulting in the whole wedding coming crashing down in more ways than one.

Having fled Nazi Germany during WW2, German theatre practitioner Bertolt Brecht was immersed in Marxist ideology and aimed to highlight the ridiculousness of capitalist lifestyle in his writing. Therefore, it was only fitting for political satirist Rory Bremner to transform Brecht’s work into a modern English production. In this adaption, we present an Anglo/Nigerian Wedding extending our celebrations of Black History Month in Manchester School of Theatre
