PRESTWICH ALT CABARET NIGHT CELEBRATES A DECADE OF TALENT
Prestwich’s alternative cabaret night Shangri La! is celebrating its tenth anniversary this month with another smorgasbord of artistic talent.
The monthly not-for-profit night, which takes place at the Carlton Club in Prestwich, features an eclectic mix of music, short theatre, film, acoustic acts, stand-up, spoken word, dance and live bands.
Co-host Jo Haydock said: "It's fantastic to have reached our tenth year and a real testament to the talent of all our acts. We're probably quite unique in that we do it for the love not the money. We share all our takings from the door with our acts - because supporting culture and community, not cash, was always our motivation.
"Yes it's all a bit random and chaotic but a lot of love and hard work has gone into the night over the years and we hope that we've helped to put Prestwich on the map and proved that culture is very much alive and kicking in North Manchester! Prestwich is changing for the better and getting more diverse and we hope to be a big part of that in the future."
This month’s eclectic-as-ever line-up features:
Peter Slater
Actor/comic/writer Peter Slater from Bolton has been a regular act at Shangri La over the years, treating us to various comedy characters including Nearly Diamond and this month... the inimitable Randolph Tempest!
Pico Puppetual Motion
Can a sponge puppet really be that funny? YES he can. Pico (Pete Kennedy) brings an entourage of puppety friends in a mini variety show with a hand-me-down budget and cut-price puppetry.
FRO
A winning spectrum of indie sounds with a prog kick.
The Happy Soul
Four piece melodic Mancunian popsters, the Happy Soul combine jazz, rock and soul.
Friday 21 July, Carlton Club, Bury Old Road, £5 on the door, doors open 8pm, first act on stage 9pm ish.
