Verbose MCR

One of Manchester’s longest running spoken word and new writing events is back at The King’s Arms, Salford on Monday 30th September !

Verbose brings a vibrant mix of spoken word and live literature from a talented bill of open mic acts and two wonderful headliners every month. Expect poetry, prose and everything in between from a real community vibe that gladly welcomes all newcomers.

Introducing our headliners!

Ciarán Hodgers (he/him/his) is an Irish spoken word poet based in the UK. His debut poetry collection Cosmocartography, published by Burning Eye Books in 2018, was shortlisted for the prestigious Rubery Book Award and toured the UK & Ireland, featuring in national media on both sides of the pond.

Winner of the Sean Dunne National Young Writer Award in 2010, an International Pangaea Poetry Slam Champion 2015 and the Word War 3 Slam Champion, he has been shortlisted for the Pushcart Prize, OutSpoken Prize for Poetry and longlisted for the Not The Foreword and Gingko Eco-poetry competition.

Published internationally in journals, anthologies, festivals, exhibitions and curriculum texts, he is also an experienced workshop leader and creative mentor, supporting people with their creative practice towards publication and a sustainable, consistent creativity.

Helen Jeffrey , is a writer, performer, poet & creative facilitator from Merseyside. A graduate of the Playwright’s Programme at the Liverpool Everyman Theatre, she has had several plays produced including, ‘The Brink’ and ‘Gun Metal Blue', which won the Blink.Theatre Award for New Writing in 2017. Helen’s latest play, ‘Buckled’ opened at the Shakespeare North Playhouse Studio in March 2024 and was programmed as part of the ‘UP NEXT’ Festival at Unity in May 2024. Helen has been writing and performing spoken word since 2018, enjoys creating work which connects with a range of audiences and recently opened for Michael Rosen at ‘A Lovely Word Poetry Festival’ in July 2024.
