Speak Your Truth, is a night celebrating owning your space, presented by Frisky Ents and BAKITA:KK. Through spoken word, music and debate, we will be exploring what it means to Speak Your Truth and hold your own.
BAKITA:KK is an international performance poet, writer and HIV activist. She has shared her poetry and delivered talks in Africa, Europe and North America (from Thaba Bosiu, in southern Africa, to a TEDx stage).
BAKITA:KK’s poetry centres identity and negotiating spaces. Through her poetry she explores the tensions between expectations and stereotypes, focusing on relationships, mental wellbeing, self-love, Black & African history and self-discovery.
Alongside BAKITA:KK, performing on the night will be: spoken word artist Abstract Benna (who has worked with the likes of Adidas, Roundhouse, BBC, National Gallery and many more); singer-song writer J Lavalay (who blends the sounds of blends R&B, gospel and soul) and fresh new poet T. (who launched a talk show to speak on the issues affected young people)!
“Staggeringly powerful poetry from Bakita, highlighting the importance of unpicking self stigma to improve quality of life” Susan Cole-Haley, NAM
