SHAME ON YOU!

Supported by Zurich City Culture and Pro Helvetia - Swiss Arts Foundation

Shame on You! is presented in conjunction with the Future Flares Festival 2023.

Shame can save us from embarrassment. Shame keeps us from total disgrace. It is impeding, it is irritating, it makes us insecure, it can trigger fear, aggression against others and oneself. We treat shame as something private, although its causes are social, religious and moral norms and constraints. Shame has many faces and can be passed on for several generations. It settles in our memory. Years, even decades later, we remember when, where, and why we were ashamed.

It is a paradox that we feel shame as something intimate and personal, although it has been deeply instilled by society, religion, culture and family. Almost everyone is affected by it. The reasons for shame are as complex as our society.

Following a journey through Switzerland, Russia, Pakistan, The Netherlands and to the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Shame On You! explores seemingly banal everyday situations and painful experiences of violence and discrimination. The Swiss-Russian duo Trixa Arnold & Ilja Komarov have developed an ever-evolving storytelling show, blending live music & personal testimony. Written three years ago but always changing, the confronting show resonates more than ever in today’s changed world. Audiences are invited to share their own personal experience of shame and join in discussions during the performance. Alongside the show comes an interactive installation, The Shame-Cloud, inviting people to anonymously record their own experiences of shame.

ADMISSION: Pay What You Can.

Pay What You Can is an ‘honesty box’ for the theatre. We and the artists will continue to programme and produce high quality events and ask you to pay what you can afford.

As a guide, for those in full time employment we would appreciate you paying between £5 and £15. We also understand people's income can be precarious, hence the lower price options. All revenue from ticket sales for events at New Adelphi Theatre will always go back to support professional artists, through residencies, commissions, touring work or for more bespoke projects where the student experience is enhanced through co-creation with arts professionals. We thank you for all your continued support.

Please note all bookings and donations come with a 50p booking fee.

Please note that all tickets are for unallocated seating.
