The Northern Youth

We are the NORTHERN YOUTH, a creative network of young people living and studying in York. An off-shoot of the York-based fashion/art/culture publication HARD Magazine, we are passionate about bringing together and celebrating the copious artistic talent found in The North of England.

Often unjustly overlooked due to the increasingly London-centric creative industries, the mission statement of The Northern Youth is to devolve this bubble through celebrating the unique identity of The North.

Mental health is a topic extremely close to the hearts of The Northern Youth. At the University of York alone, eight students have killed themselves since 2014 and half of all ambulance call outs to the University of York have been for attempted suicide or self harm. The millennial generation are facing a mental ill-health epidemic and as mental health is encouragingly given unprecedented attention by national media and the halls of Westminster, we want to take ownership of the issue and incite a discussion from the perspectives of the young people directly affected.

Over the next year, we have planned a series of innovative events, exhibitions and showcases platforming Northern talent to raise awareness for young people's mental health. A year which is culminating in our biggest event yet, October 2017.

Suffering in silence should not be tolerated. The importance of mental well-being has been overlooked for too long. The Northern Youth will be heard.
